New Moon and film critics

the New Moon movie had just recently hit the big screens in my hometown. I read a handful of film critics and I noticed that almost all of them gave negative remarks on the film, one of them even called the film “childish, unrealistic, not suitable for mature audience”. BUT STILL, those critics also expected the NM movie to do well on box office because teenage girls would still rush to enjoy the ‘roman’, to see their idol(Edward), the cute werewolf(Jacob) showing off his muscle.

I would have to agree they are probably correct, but still I felt ashamed that the audience of young women in my city has been reduced to a point they are expected/predicted to go watching a movie only for the man-flesh’s sake.T____________T

Irony, the irony!!!!>_<

PS: it’s off topic but since I recently discovered one of my favorite Naruto fanfics is based on L J. Smith’s Nightworld series, I’m really curious about the books, so please someone please tell me is it good? If it’s good I’ll buy it. If it’s another high school romance sugar-coated with vampire stuff I’ll stay away from it. And what do you think about House of Night series?

Angela Carter's The Company Of Wolves

Angela Carter's The Company Of Wolves

Out of a series of coincidences, I borrowed Angela Carter’s radio plays/TV script collection: The Curious Room.
The stories that caught my fancy is The Company of Wolves(in the forms of both radio drama and TV script), her retelling/rewritten version of the fairy tale The Little Red Riding Hood.

I checked wiki and noticed Angela Carter wrote a series of Little Red Riding Hood related short stories in a collection called The Bloody Chamber. Her retelling of the classical fairy tale is feministic and even…realistic(despite still being a fairy tale), instead of needing the Hunter to save her, the Little Red Riding Hood fight against the Wolf after she discovered her Grandmother was eaten, in the radio drama she even has the line “I’m not some man’s meat” to demonstrate her courage and independence, nice.

The ancient forest, a wolf and a coming of age girl are the key factors of the story, The Company of Wolves explores young girl’s sexuality and the unsetting transition from childhood to adulthood.
To me the forest represents the world of sub-consciousness and unknown; while the Wolf that wanders in the forest can well be the symbol of seduction and danger. In Carter’s version of the fairy tale; what’s there for the Little Red Riding Hood to choose is whether to remain passive, to fight back or to embrace it.

Later I watched the movie adaptation of the play/script, and I cannot help but noticing that the difference between the scripts and adaptation. The best parts of the movie are when Grandmother told werewolf-related stories to Little Red Riding Hood, those included a story of a man turned into werewolf at his wedding night and a boy meeting the Devil in the wood and is changed into a wolf. Later Little Red Ridding Hood in turn told her own stories to her mother and the Wolf, first there's a story about a witch-woman turning her unfaithful noble-born lover and his guests into wolves(That's my favorite!), and a story of a wolf turning into a girl. The last of the story foretold the final twist that was excluded in the movie adaptation: that Little Red Riding Hood eventually turned into a she-wolf, leaving her safe, normal old world behind and entering into the unknown realm.(PS: I dislike the alterative ending that the movie was left with!>_<;)

Here’s a really nice fan-made trailer of the movie; really, really nice music.[link]

another Twilight-related things

Yesterday a LJ friend of mine messaged me about the ‘news’ of Stephanie Meyer the author of Twilight series was found dead in her apartment.

Which of course is just a hoax.

Internet is filled with stupid rumors like this but what had alarmed me is the fact that some of my friends got the impression that I HATE Stephanie Meyer with a passion.

Frankly, what I hate is the Twilight series and the various kinds of stupidity it promotes. BUT really, I don’t actually hate Stephanie Meyer as a person.

When you hate someone, it would use a lot of energy in hating him/her, why should I ever waste my energy to hate someone who’s not related to my life?

Here’s my limited knowledge about SMeyer:

1. She wrote the Twilight series(not a saga! So not a saga!!!) and The Host.
2. In one of my self-torture attempts, I watched the movie that is an adaptation of Twilight the novel, which in my opinion is one of the most stupid movies I had ever watched in the recent years.
3. Among the two set of books mentioned above, the former is clearly a disgrace to the vampire genre; and the latter is a complete LOL material to the Sci-Fi world.

To sum up, I don’t have much respect to SMeyer, simply because of the stupid books she wrote. But hearing the news of her being found dead won’t send me jumping about with joy. I SIMPLY DON’T GIVE A SHIT.

PS. My dear girlfriend’s opinion of Twilight:

Gf:*sees a poster of New Moon* I wonder if they made a sequel simply because the first movie had grossed so much money?
Me: *not interested* who knows and who cares?
Gf: I knew Twilight was up to no good as soon as I read the plot description.
Me: *laughs* You’re wise, but I had actually watched the first movie from beginning to the end.
Gf: *in shock* How could you???
Me: Well I did it only to see how bad it actually is. And back then I had no idea the vampires in the movie would sparkle under the sun!^^;
Gf:*in more shock* Vampires, SPARKLE?O___o;;;
Me: I guess now you got how bad it actually is....
Gf:*sighs*
Me: The only reason I can think of for chicks to enjoy that movie is that they wish they were Bella Swan, who is being described as a good-for-nothing teenage girl but still have handsome boys(the vampire and the werewolf, mind you) falling all over her.
Gf: YUCK!

Ah, my girlfriend and the reasons why I like her.

to be completely honest with you people, I can tell you that for most of the time I don't believe it what I have been writing in my fanfictions for all those years.

Why would anyone think love is gonna save your from yourself? I don't think so.

Love is not enough, never enough.

Anne Rice
Armand to Louis: "You realize this woman writes that her vampires sparkle in the sun!" Louis in reply. "Well, that's better than burning up in the sun, isn't it?"
