Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by  Michelle Hodkin

Book Description from Goodreads.com: Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

Hell, this whole book is one hell of a totally fucked up mess.

Miss Michelle Hodkin seems to have some interesting ideas, but how she excised those ideas and how she wrote her book is simply disastrous.

Seriously, the entire novel barely makes any sense.

At first we got the main character Mara Dyer's traumatic experience of losing all her friends in a freak, unexplained accident, how Mara and her family tried to pick up the pieces, move on and start a new life, how Mara was haunted by the accident and the phantoms of her dead friends. All of the above could have created an excellent story, but sadly not only Miss Hodkin shoved the mystery of the accident and Mara's struggle to keep her sanity to the background and went all-out for the romance between Mara and the super handsome, super rich bad boy in school, Noah.

Bitch, please.

I don't want to waste your time, so I will only state that both Mara and Noah are so cliched that I simply can't take them seriously, plus the romance between Mara and Noah is simply all hell of YA cliches broken loose.

Mara Dyer is one of the most cliched, immature heroines I have ever seen in an YA novel (only Bianca from Evernight manages to beat her down), and her love interest Noah Shaw is a douchebag with a Bad Boy disguise. Plus, almost everyone in the book is acting like the most stereotyped, bratty, empty headed and stupid teenager, to a point that they became total cliches.

Not only the teenager characters are unlikable, the adults are just as bad, none of them is likable.

For most of the time, none of the character, their emotion and the situation they had found themselves in, holds any sense of reality to me. Everything looks and feels fake for most of the time when I read the book.

Plus Miss Hodkin is also being very greedy in her first book of the series. We got the mysterious death of Mara's friends, we got the cliched romance between Mara and Noah, we got highschool dramas with the hateful Queen Bee and a bunch of bullies, then we got Mara's special supernatural power, then we also got the drama of Mara's brother being kidnapped... last but not least ****plot spoiler warning**** Noah turned out also having special power.****end of spoiler**** All of these being thrown together very clumsily. Miss Hodkin, it's just too much.

Finally, I want to point out NOTHING HAPPENS IN THIS 400+ BOOK. At the end Mara realized the truth about the freak accident and she got hooked up with the hottest, richest and sexiest boy in school, that's it.

My suggestion: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS BOOK.

I highly disapprove of this review. This book is one of the best books I've ever read. Do not listen to this person, read it for yourself than make your own opinion of it.
